XIXth Century

A selection of high quality 19th century European paintings available for sale Here is an offering of artworks by Western and Eastern European artists depicting landscapes, portraits and city scenes. In the 19th century, European art transformed from a traditional Old Masters style towards a new Modernist approach, establishing new techniques surrounding the use of light and colour. A new group of artists emerged with some of the leading figures being French painters such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Théodore Géricault, Francisco Goya as well as Gustave Courbet and Honoré Daumier and of course Édouard Manet. Jozef Israëls is one of the leading Dutch XIXth century painters. Their work focused on the depiction and exploration of light and colour. Nineteenth century art was already laying the groundwork for Impressionist art and what would later become Modern art. Many of those painters studied at the Académie Julian or at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes. Many movements emerged within the 19th century art such as Symbolism, Social Realism, Barbizon, Naturalism or Romanticism to name a few. These paintings offer very good value and are highly collectible, often being presented in international museums and institutions.
