Artist's Biography

The self-taught French artist Gustave Cariot was born to working-class parents in the Paris district of Marais and, despite parental disapproval, he began sketching from a young age. Clearly influenced by the painterly techniques of the Impressionists and deeply drawn to that group’s often pastoral subject-matter, Cariot’s work vividly captures the lush and constantly moving diffusions of light across trees, rivers and clouds. The charm of the French countryside and the romance of the River Seine in his native Paris dominate his oeuvre and gained him critical success in the annual exhibitions of the prestigious Société des Artistes Indépendants, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon d'Automne and the Salon d'hiver.
