Artist's Biography
Probably born in Ghent, there is no certainty on the location and date of his birth. If the Ghent record indicates that he was baptized on 4 May 1623, in another record dated 10 June 1665 he is listed as a native of Overijse.
Painter, draughtsman and engraver, this multifaceted landscape artist is now mainly known for his Italianising and topographical drawings of sites throughout the Southern Netherlands.
The subjects of his works are either imaginary, idealised panoramas or topographical views of towns and villages, where often small figures animate the foreground or the composition of his landscapes.
Typically in the blue-green tones characteristic of his Flemish contemporaries such as Lucas van Uden and Gillis Peeters, the compositions show his distinctive drawing style, particularly in his handling of trees and figures.
