Our current exhibition East meets West explores the relationship between Eastern and Western abstract art from the post-war period until the present day. Through comparisons between artists, this exhibition positions abstraction as a uniting thread across disparate artistic networks, looking at how it was uniquely adapted across the Far East to Europe and the USA.
The exhibition features Asian artists who worked in the West, and Western artists who worked in and took inspiration from the East. It includes pieces by major contemporary Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, who from 1957 spent a period living in New York, and conversely, works by American artists Sam Francis and Paul Jenkins, both of whom were influenced by Eastern philosophy, with the latter spending long periods in Japan.
Specific highlights include a large-scale Chun Kwang-Young, works by Toshimitsu Imai – a significant figure within the Japanese avant-garde, and a beautiful gouache by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor. These will be displayed alongside a Gerhard Richter painting, a quintessential example of Op Art by Victor Vasarely and a meditative piece by prominent Chinese artist, Jiang Dahai.
East meets West seeks to ignite the conversation between these abstract artists and considers how abstraction evolved across the globe over the past 70 years.
